Hi all,
My snuggly male kitty hasn't been feeling too well lately. Not anything concrete, just acting a little punky. He was due for his Rabies vaccine so I took him to the vet for a thorough check up. He didn't have a fever and he's eating, drinking and using the litter box normally so we went ahead with his Rabies vxn and drew some blood and urine (poor boy had a rough day at the vet). We have to wait a few more days for all the results, but the vet tech called me with some results today. Kidneys, CBC and primary thyroid results all looked normal. The only abnormality that she mentioned was that his urine was alkaline. She asked me what we fed and then said she would have the vet call me back. I haven't heard back from the vet and tried to ask the tech what this means and she said that she will have the vet call me back that she can't answer these questions.

I'm freaking out though. I'm so paranoid about male cats and urinary issues and I don't want anything to happen to my sweet boy. He already eats primarily wet food, and has a lot of water fountains that he drinks out of regularly and he is not having any urinary issues or litter box problems. The tech didn't mention anything about seeing any crystals in the urine or any other abnormalities and stressed that the kidneys look really good.

How worried do I have to be and what can I do to prevent crystal formation and other issues? He is a 4 year old neutered male Tabby.

Thanks
Sara

I don't have a ton of experience, but I wouldn't worry. Simon had two episodes of bloody urine/cystitis/UTI/whatever you want to call it two years ago. The episodes occurred within a month of each other. No crystals showed up, and we did x-rays to rule out bladder stones. We changed him to a prescription urinary tract food, but after about a year I switched him to some of the over-the-counter urinary foods and he's done fine.

I hope it's nothing serious. {{{{{Sara and kitty}}}}}
